Waterproof Tape

From: marysfisk (maryfisk@newpensmith.com) | Date: 2004-12-21 05:10:28 UTC

New to letterboxing, I read on the basics home page that people were still searching
for the ideal waterproof tape for the boxes. Might I suggest greenhouse repair tape.
It comes in 100 foot rolls 2 inches and 4 inches wide as well as larger patch sheeting.
It is made for exterior use in patching plastic greenhouses. It sticks and holds up
well for 6 to 12 months in direct exposure to all elements (wind, rain, snow, heat,
winter cold, summer sunlight), although it tends to yellow over time in direct
sunlight. It is both thicker and more adhesive than average clear tapes. It is available
through any commercial greenhouse supplier.

A pdf describing the tape is available for download here:

ROFL - now this is probably a perfect example of something that should be advertised on
the BOXHEADS group. No, I haven't gone there since this morning to check.

If it can't be fixed with a hammer and tape, it can't be fixed ... wise words from Grampa.

Ok, pet peeve time:

It's DUCT TAPE. The product was developed for taping the seams of HVAC
duct work to minimize air leaks. However, so many people call it duck
tape (because it's hard to say duct tape and pronounce all the
consonants with out spitting) that some companies now market it as
"duck tape" (vile despoilers of the language). But no one ever
invented a product to hold down ducks or to seal the seams of ducks,
IT'S DUCT TAPE!!!

Please return to your normally scheduled lurking

Didn't Homeland Security tell us to tape ducks to our windows to keep
out chemical and biological material during an attack?

Well no wonder the ducks I've taped always seem to
object! So do you think a stapler would work in place
of ducT tape???

You know, I should have known that not using that
little (r) symbol after Duck Tape would come back to
haunt me, because I actually was referring
specifically to Duck Brand duct tape, as originated by
Manco in Avon Lake, Ohio, in 1985. Jack Kahl, please
forgive me! I guess that, being a member of the Duck
Tape Club (www.ducktapeclub.com) to me there is no
other duct tape than Duck Tape duct tape.

Did you know, that in 1985, "Jack Kahl officially
re-names duct tape "Duck Tape" and creates Manco T.
Duck, Mancos mascot and ambassador of good will."
(that's taken straight from their webpage,
http://www.henkelca.com/about/history/80s.asp) But
Jack sold Manco to Henkel Consumer Adhesives, and that
Duck's name is now Trust E. Duck. I hope the
changeover wasn't traumatic for him...

So, why do I know so much about duct tape and Duck
Tape and Mr. Jack Kahl? Well, Mr. Kahl donated a
bunch of money to his alma mater and a building
bearing his name now sits where my daddy's parking
space used to be, but that's not the real reason.
There is a letterbox, that's all carved and ready to
be planted dedicated to the subject, waiting for the
Northern Ohio snow to thaw enough for us to get it out
there.....

That wasn't the original invention however, was it? Wasn't that an
after-idea? I was under the impression that duck tape, made from cotton duck, was
first made during the second world war to keep water out of ammunition cases.
Later, when they began using it for duct work, the colour changed and it became
"duct" tape. Now it's used for anything the male mind can possibly imagine.

Funny you mention that - my husband's cousin's husband
(now ex-) was a salesman for Duck Tape brand duct
tape. He sold to industrial users, but he always had
it in every color, pattern, and width you could
imagine. He always came to family gatherings bearing
cases of duct tape for us to take home. I can't
remember the last time I paid for a roll of duct tape!
Alas, he and the cousin divorced this year, so I
guess this Christmas will not be taped up quite as
nicely as it has been in the past - that is, of
course, unless she has duct tape alimony she's willing
to share!

I was always told to just "get a bigger hammer", that usually works one way or another!
